Prior to joining Ontier, José María was Senior Legal Specialist for the Pan-American region, where he worked in the legal department of Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina and Chile. His experience includes the preparation of corporate, financial and commercial contracts, as well as the development of M&A transactions and regulatory analysis.
José María has also advised in areas such as fintech, payment systems, acquisitions, credit, debit and financial services, managing corporate restructurings and contractual negotiations, always with a strategic approach and tailored to the needs of each client.
I worked as an Associate at Calatrava Consultores S.C., where I specialized in legal compliance support for fintech companies and traditional financial institutions. I contributed to improving their technology, open banking, smart contracts and other financial innovations. My work included executing mergers and acquisitions, structuring investments and financings, and providing legal services for financial technology companies. I collaborated with several financial institutions, structuring buy-sell transactions, mergers, investments, spin-offs and collaboration agreements with financial institutions. I also advised on transactions with digital assets and NFTs, ensuring tax and legal compliance with Mexican authorities.
Since May 2021, I have also been a Senior Research Assistant in Mexico City. In this role, I collaborate on cybersecurity regulations in Mexico, focusing on privacy, security and protection of personal data on digital platforms within the e-banking and fintech sectors. I have also contributed to legislative projects, including a law initiative to regulate the use of personal data by INEGI, and I have conducted research on law and technology, human rights, international law, comparative law and legal sociology. I have a law degree from the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE), a diploma in Law and Digital Economy from the University of Salamanca, and I took a course on Payments and FinTech at Wharton.
