Italy implements Greenwashing Directive

Categories

On 9 March 2026, Italy has implemented Directive (EU) 2024/825 (Greenwashing Directive) through the publication of Legislative Decree No. 30 of 20 February 2026. This decree amends the Consumer Code by introducing new definitions, such as “environmental claim” and “sustainability label”, while sanctioning new misleading practices or omissions and expanding the “black list” of prohibited commercial practices.

The ultimate goal is to transition sustainability from a mere marketing buzzword into a tangible reality, empowering consumers to make truly informed purchasing decisions and fostering more sustainable consumption models.

While this represents a vital safeguard for companies genuinely investing in sustainability, it also demands a comprehensive review of communication strategies: every social or environmental claim must now be grounded in scientific, verifiable, and well-documented evidence.
